Identify the bike category
A legal e-bike has working pedals and meets BC motor-assisted-cycle requirements. A light e-bike has no throttle assist and a maximum speed of 25 km/h; the minimum rider age is 14. A standard e-bike permits throttle assist and up to 32 km/h; the minimum age is 16.
Both categories need an approved helmet. A legal e-bike does not need a driver’s licence or insurance under the stated provincial category. A faster or non-compliant vehicle is not automatically covered by these rules.
Where and how to ride
Use bike lanes, roads and multi-use facilities where cycling is permitted. Do not use sidewalks, crosswalks, parks or park trails unless signs explicitly allow it. Follow traffic signals and right-of-way.
Use working lights and reflectors at night, signal turns and ride predictably. Light e-bikes cannot carry passengers. Riders under 16 cannot carry passengers or tow others. Check the transit operator’s rules before taking an e-bike onto a vehicle.
Using Burnaby’s Lime pilot
The City says the shared e-bike pilot began in June 2026. Users must be at least 18. The Lime app handles bike location, unlocking, fares and payment. Prices and passes change, so this guide does not invent a fixed fare.
The programme serves selected areas rather than guaranteeing city-wide availability. Check the app for the current service area and bike supply. Trips must begin and end at designated locations. Never block an entrance, sidewalk, transit stop, driveway or accessible route. Lime bikes carry one rider only.
Help and reporting
Lime owns and operates the fleet, including maintenance and parking response. Report a broken or badly parked bike, account trouble or a billing issue through the app or 1-888-546-3345.
Unsafe riding goes to Burnaby RCMP at 604-646-9999; an immediate emergency uses 911. The City monitors the one-year pilot, but this does not make City Hall the operator for app refunds.
