About Topped Toys
Topped Toys is a Vancouver-based manufacturer specializing in premium, body-safe, platinum-cured silicone products. Our products are manufactured in-house, independently tested for biocompatibility, and recognized for their material quality and specialized colour formulations.
As demand continues to grow, we’re looking for a motivated and hands-on Process Engineering Co-op Student to help us scale our manufacturing operations. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute directly to the transition from manual production methods to a more efficient, standardized, and scalable manufacturing process.
Please note: Our products are in the sexual wellness industry. This position focuses on industrial polymer casting and process engineering within a professional and respectful workplace.
About the Role
This isn’t your typical engineering co-op position. You’ll take ownership of real manufacturing challenges, work closely with company leadership and production specialists, and see your ideas implemented directly on the production floor.
You’ll gain practical experience in polymer processing, CAD design, equipment evaluation, tooling development, and continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities
* Process Optimization: Conduct trials to improve silicone dispensing, mixing, degassing, curing, and overall production consistency.
* Equipment Implementation: Evaluate and support the introduction of automated meter-mix dispensing systems.
* Mold & Tooling Development: Design and improve production molds, master patterns, jigs, and fixtures using CAD and 3D printing.
* Production Efficiency: Analyze workflows, identify bottlenecks, and recommend improvements to production capacity, layout, and ergonomics.
* Quality Improvement: Investigate manufacturing defects, analyze production data, and implement corrective measures.
* Process Documentation: Develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), maintenance checklists, and work instructions.
* Engineering Analysis: Research equipment options, assess costs and benefits, and present recommendations to management.
What We’re Looking For
* Currently pursuing a degree in Mechanical, Materials, Manufacturing, Chemical Engineering, or a related discipline.
* Understanding of fluid mechanics, material properties, polymer behaviour, and manufacturing processes.
* Proficiency with CAD software such as SolidWorks, Fusion 360, Onshape, or equivalent.
* Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
* Comfortable working hands-on in a manufacturing or workshop environment.
* Strong communication, documentation, and organizational skills.
* Ability to work independently while collaborating with a small team.
Nice to Have:
* Experience with silicone casting, molding, resins, or elastomers.
* Familiarity with 3D printing and rapid prototyping.
* Participation in engineering design teams or technical projects.
* Exposure to lean manufacturing or continuous improvement methodologies.
What We Offer
* Meaningful Project Ownership: Lead a genuine manufacturing scale-up initiative from planning through implementation.
* Hands-On Engineering Experience: Work directly with industrial equipment, polymer materials, CAD, tooling, and production processes.
* Direct Mentorship: Collaborate closely with leadership and experienced production professionals.
* Real-World Impact: See your engineering contributions translate into measurable improvements.
* Career Growth: Strong performers may be considered for a permanent Process Specialist position.
How to Apply
Interested candidates should submit their resume, cover letter, and unofficial academic transcript through the UBC Applied Science Co-op portal.
In your cover letter, we’d love to hear about a hands-on engineering project you’ve completed or a process challenge you’ve helped solve.
