Central Park in Burnaby this fall: walk in, but check the parking closure

Near Metrotown, Central Park offers a forest break without planning a mountain trip. Start with the wide perimeter trail if your group needs a smoother route, then add distance only if it suits everyone. The Patterson and Kingsway lot is listed closed October 5-23, weather permitting. The park is open dawn to dusk, and the outdoor pool is seasonal.

What to know before setting out

The park combines forest paths with ponds, gardens and sports spaces. Choose the walk you want rather than assuming the whole 86-hectare park is one flat loop.

The city describes the perimeter trail as smooth and wide, suitable for mobility aids. That statement applies to that path. It does not establish the same surface for every forest branch.

The current page lists accessible washrooms throughout the park. A separate October 13-16 maintenance notice has passed and is not treated here as an active closure. The outdoor pool is a summer feature, not an October swim option.

Before you leave

  • Read the city work notice before driving.
  • Use Patterson station if it suits your route.
  • Pick a signed path and a daylight return.
  • Keep dogs leashed and use designated parking only.

A forest break close to Metrotown

The January 2025 weekend discussion liked outdoor and group activities but warned that indoor entertainment can get costly. A short local walk is one choice, provided the route fits the weather.

A November 2023 favourite-walk discussion included Central Park alongside Deer Lake and Barnet Marine Park. The attraction was not being far from the city: a later reply liked the mix of streets and forest on the perimeter. A June 2024 family question near Metrotown brought more Central Park recommendations, including from someone who valued the paths for a stroller.

The older discussion also contained a complaint about tents and rubbish. That is a dated visitor observation, not a current description of every entrance or a judgement about people using the park. It does show why a broad recommendation cannot tell you what a particular path will feel like on the day. Choose the route for your needs and use current city notices for access.

Keep a local walk easy to change

The advantage of Central Park is that a modest walk can fit around an ordinary day. You do not need to visit every feature. Choose the perimeter route if its described surface suits your needs, or a shorter path for a quick break. A parking closure makes transit worth considering, but the best travel choice still depends on your starting point. Make that choice before the group heads toward a closed lot.

Let the route do the work

The city describes the perimeter trail as wide and smooth enough for mobility aids. That makes it a clearer starting choice for a mixed group than heading into an unspecified forest trail because someone called the whole park easy. The 86-hectare size provides options, but you do not need to cross the whole site for a worthwhile visit.

The Patterson and Kingsway parking lot is listed closed October 5-23, weather permitting. Arrange the meeting point before leaving so people do not head for that lot separately. The city lists other designated lots and Patterson SkyTrain access. Use the current signs rather than a past washroom-maintenance arrangement. The outdoor pool is seasonal, so build this autumn outing around paths and an open entrance.
