Anton’s Pasta Bar: the portions are enormous. So are the differences of opinion.

Anton’s Pasta Bar has admirers who queue for it and critics who cannot understand the queue. Both have noticed the portions. The Burnaby Heights restaurant’s large plates, $28 pasta choices and $32 seafood dishes invite a simple question: are you buying the dinner you want, or an impressive amount of dinner?

A restaurant that does not believe in a little pasta

Anton’s began in 1983 with nine tables and a four-burner stove. Its enduring reputation is for generous portions, the sort that make ordering sound straightforward and finishing sound like a personal development project. The size is part of the attraction at 4260 East Hastings Street.

Some contributors to Burnaby’s local forum remembered student value: a lot of food for a manageable price. Others never rated the cooking particularly highly. The memory of a bargain survives rather better than the bargain itself when the price moves on.

The queue and the critics are looking at each other

One defender pointed out that, for all the complaints, the line still went down the block. Another offered the less combative explanation that people like different things. A contributor who loved the gnocchi was disappointed by other aspects of the experience. Nobody had managed to make a large serving of pasta produce a unanimous verdict.

The October argument also concerned menu pictures, with people suspecting artificial generation and disliking what they saw. That production claim was not independently established. What is clear is that food imagery can irritate a diner before a fork reaches the plate, especially when favourite dishes or familiar expectations have changed.

A large serving does not divide the whole bill

The current menu includes $28 pasta dishes, $32 seafood selections and garlic bread at $7.95. During peak periods, there is a $20-per-person minimum; groups of six or more have an 18 percent gratuity added. Sharing is therefore an idea to check against the policies, not a secret mathematical tunnel out of the restaurant bill.

The restaurant does not take reservations. A generous meal can be good value for someone who enjoys it, but a long wait followed by food you do not particularly like is a less convincing economy. The portion has done its job; the evening may not have.

Choose what you like, not what you can defeat

The recurring disagreement is useful because it separates quantity, taste, price and atmosphere. A familiar filling dish can be exactly right without being everyone’s idea of exceptional pasta. Equally, a large plate does not oblige anyone to applaud it.

Check the menu for the actual dish, agree on the group arrangements and go because that dinner sounds appealing. The most sensible defence in the local exchange was also the smallest: different people enjoy different food. At Anton’s, there is at least plenty of it over which to disagree.
